Prevent phishing fraud by exercising caution

Web surfers should take extra care to protect themselves from "phishing" fraud, according to online payments provider PayPal.
Credit card and bank account details are commonly stolen by fraudsters using this technique, which often consists of an official-looking bank email sent out to victims.
If successful, the email recipients are tricked into clicking on a link contained in the message, which then takes them through to a website where they are encouraged to fill in personal details. These could include bank and credit card account numbers and passwords.
Garreth Griffith, head of risk management at PayPal UK, said: "With more people than ever banking online in the UK, it's really important that people remain vigilant whenever they are making financial transactions online and don't inadvertently leave themselves open to becoming a victim of a scam or fraud."
He added: "Phishers are using increasingly sophisticated ways to design phishing emails to lure people into thinking they have come from a trusted provider, such as their bank or credit card provider. If anyone is ever in doubt about the authenticity of an email, and concerned it may be a phishing scam, they should never click on the link in the email."
Security firm CPP recently revealed that nine in 10 people cannot tell the difference between a bank email and a "phishing" email at first glance.
