In 1965 the Asquith brothers, who were butchers from West Yorkshire, joined together with Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Ltd to form ‘Asda’ (capitalised in 1985). They went on to open stores in Yorkshire, and finally nationwide. Asda is now American-owned – headquartered in Leeds, West Yorkshire. In 1999, retail giant Walmart took over the company in a £6.7 billion takeover.
