Aqua credit cards have been available in the UK since 2002; since when they have developed a range of different card propositions. Although these products all offer different and varied functionality (from cash back to 0% purchases), they have all been designed to appeal to people with poor credit or unusual credit circumstances that most other lenders would be unwilling to accept. Indeed, having accepted over one million applicants, Aqua have become known as something of a specialist lender to overlooked people who are perhaps unemployed, self-employed or do not have a regular income.
Although Aqua considers circumstances that other card issuers might find prohibitive, they still operate in the same robust regulatory framework as other UK card issuers. As such, products are not available to non-resident individuals, people under the age of 18, and people who would be overindebted if offered additional borrowing.
Of course, accepting people who might be declined by another credit card issuer means Aqua expose themselves to greater lending risk than many of their competitors, which is somewhat reflected by the fact that the APR's can be higher than others. However, that is not to say that Aqua customers with a mature approach to credit management needlessly lose out on better rates available elsewhere, since Aqua products are available that reward good management with a reduced interest rates.
Aside from the general convenience that obtaining a credit card has, Aqua cards also offer certain additional bespoke features to their card holders.
Aqua Secure is an online fraud prevention system that uses requires users to complete additional security checks to complete card-not-present online transactions. These checks help prevent fraudulent card use, which could lead to increased charges for customers if left unchecked.
